I came across an article by Amita Shah, a practicing psychotherapist, which inpired me to write the essay below.
We all are filled with various emotions at any point of time. It is important that we understand these emotions and act upon them.
It is important that we express our feelings. The expression of feelings is a search for understanding. If we suppress them, then they are not acted upon, and hence it may sometimes lead to out of control blow-ups, depression or irritation.
However if we express our feelings outright, then it may hurt the receiver. If you just shout at your colleague, or get wild with your friend, or talk harshly with your elders, definitely they will be disappointed with you.
You should accept your feelings, process them and then express them. The expression of your feelings should be conscious.
If you suppress your feelings, you disconnect with the power to create what you want in life. If you dwell in your emotions, you block the power to get what you want in life. Hence you must process your emotions: Processing your emotions means you feel, manage and release them and get what you want in life.
In order to express yourself correctly, you need to understand and manage your emotions. You need to work on the following 3 "personal competencies":
1) Self-Awareness: Knowing one’s internal states, preferences, resources, and intuitions.
2) Self-Regulation: Managing one’s internal states, impulses, and resources.
3) Motivation: Emotional tendencies that guide or facilitate reaching goals.
Also, when you express your emotions, you should think about the receiver of your emotions. You need to work on "social competencies":
1) Empathy: Awareness of others’ feelings, needs, and concerns.
2) Social Skills: Adeptness at inducing desirable responses in others.

Representing human emotions using an FSM? Even a turing won't be enough! :D
@dexter and @vivek: i tag you both... try writing a similar post... like, write about a topic like "human emotions and how you would manage them" or "the way to take correct decisions"...
u find HR blabber very boring na? well, with this post i realised writing and expressing your views on such topics is very hard... NP hard...!! :)
there are people who dont know "what" to think and "how" to think... as you go deeper into philosophy, its becomes imperative that you organise your thoughts and words and "preach" what you know to such people...
knoledge sharing, thats what it is, isnt it?! :)
Quite true. I agree partially though.
How do expect an extremely agitated person in a heated fight to express himself clearly?
And we can't bottle up the ocean of emotions either. So, wise men said, "COOL OFF". Meaning channel the emotions away(slam door .... its good for you, bad for furniture though ;) ), remove the agitating factor (leave room, go for walk .... i dont mean to say kill the agitator ;) ). Some people call it "Getting it out of the system". Then MIND can think without the cloud of emotions.
Emotions are sometimes good. What tonnes of motivation can't do, anger can get it done in minutes. Just a matter of getting emotions to work for you. Its what EQ is all about.
I stop commenting, lest the "boring" emotion is evoked!!
Its all what EQ is about .... getti
as far as im concerned letting out emotons is a very importat aspect of life..... nd every oneis not that good to express .... nd it also depends on how good you are at expressing. their are people who express it out well when they rite it down, some one sings it out, some one just tells it directly to the opposite person....
nd its always not necessary that who ever we love or care the most is easy to let your emotions out to the person infact i belive that it is more difficult to express ur self to ur loved onces..... thats bcos u don want to worry the other person with your problems or nething that is bthering you......thats where love and care comes beween your emotions...
so the rite things would be maitain a balace between both and make expression a platform to know one another than making a barrier between two or more people....
and be it good or bad expressions are very important bcos it acts mostly like a defination to a relationship or a situation.... and some how it gives an idea of ur presence and ur existence.. it also gives you an identity with which you are actually identified...
